As a member of Zander Insurance's ID Theft Protection Plan, we want to make sure that you are aware and up-to-date on events that may increase your risk of ID Theft. A recent data breach at Epsilon, the world's largest permission-based email marketing provider, has affected clients of many of the largest banks and retailers in the US including; Capital One, US Bank, Citi, Kroger, Walgreens and Target…just to name a few. These companies have now begun warning customers that their email servers have been breached and that customers' email addresses and names have been compromised.
The biggest danger is that spammers can now target you with emails pretending to come from these legitimate companies that you have done business with in the past. You could be tricked into providing your log-in information or you could be sent malware or a dangerous web link. This tactic is often referred to as "phishing".
• Never click on an email if you do not recognize the sender.
• Your bank will never ask you to confirm account information in an email or text message unless you have set up this type of service directly with your financial institution.
• Retailers you have accounts with will not ask for personal information in an email.
• Never give out any of your personal information or account information unless you initiate the phone call.
The list of affected banks and businesses continues to grow. You can click on this link from Security Week to get the most current information.
